Statue of David
David…a masterpiece by Michelangelo. The Statue of David is a nude statue which depicts the biblical hero David. The Statue stands at 17 feet tall and is made entirely from one piece of marble. The head and hands were sculpted unproportionally large for the body…however, from where I was standing, you couldn’t notice that at all. The cool thing about this Statue is that it truly showcases Michelangelo’s talent as a sculptor and of course his deep understanding of the human form; despite his renowned fame for painting The Sistine Chapel in Rome, Michelangelo was first and foremost a renowned sculptor.
The Statue is featured in the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence, Italy. It’s a small gallery who’s main focus is the Statue itself, however it does also host a small collection of other paintings and sculptures. I myself didn’t really care for the others, thus after spending some time admiring The David Statue, I was on my way.
Entrance fee: €11.00 (advance tickets can be purchased with an additional service charge of €4.00)
Duration of visit: 30 minutes – 1 hour
Traveler’s tip: I would strongly recommend buying your tickets in advance as the lines to buy tickets at the museum are extremely long. I made the attempt at showing up early to get tickets, however it was a fail. I ended up buying them online for the next day. So unless you’re prepared to queue up for at least two hours for tickets for an exhibit which takes on average 30mins to complete, buying them online and eating the extra cost is the way to go.
